Today I am grateful for the ability to read books freely. I have just started Breath, Eyes, Memory, a Novel by Edwidge Danticat, and one of the characters does not know how to read. She is not educated, and is sad as a result. I empathize with the character for a few reasons. Number 1, I am of Haitian descent. Both of my parents are Haitian, but I was born in the United States. As a result, I have been able to take advantage of the education system we have here. The novel, which starts off in Haiti, talks about the main character’s journey to the United States. I am only at chapter 6, so I cannot go into too many details, but that is something that really stuck out to me. The character Tante Atie, would do anything to be able to read the bible ,that she keeps under her pillow at night. Second, I love reading, and cannot imagine what it feels like to not be able to read what I want to. Or what it’s like to have people look at you differently, because you do not know how.
Take time today to appreciate your favorite book, but also the ability to read whatever/whenever you’d like.
